Apparently, Bruce was a lot sicker than we thought; M found him dead in his house last night. Besides the eye problems he had over the past week, he hadn't been exhibiting any other signs indicating that he was sick - he was still eating and would play whenever we took him out of his cage. His eye infection had even started to clear up. I really wish we had known there was something more wrong with him. :(
This is the first time I've had to deal with a pet dying at home (other than fish). I dealt with the deaths of three puppies when I was a child, but they were euthanized at the vet's office; I've never actually seen a dead pet or had to think about what to do with the body. I know some people probably think that he was just a hamster, but I bonded with him as I would with a dog or a cat. He would come out of his house when I called him and would jump up and down on his hind legs when he heard the food bag. He also preferred me to hand-feed him. It's no secret around here that he was my favorite of our two hamsters.
Bruce was just a few weeks shy of his second birthday. I will really miss his funny little personality. :(

oh no! Since I lost a hammie recently, I can relate. I'm sorry to hear about this.
Sad :( Sorry to hear about Bruce.
Oh, dear! So sorry to hear this. I remember how sad we were as sb's hamsters departed - they all have distinct personalities - and their affection is so undemanding and sweet.
Poor Bruce! I am so sorry--I am sure you will miss him terribly.
So very sorry for you. :(
I'm sorry about little Bruce. May you remember his happy hammie face every time you hear a weird little noise.
Oh, no! That's too sad, I'm sorry to hear of your loss. How could you not love that little bundle of fur.
RIP Bruce!!! You were a goofy hamster.
My sympathies
So sorry about your loss. RIP, Bruce.
Awww, sorry to hear it. :(
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about Bruce. At least you will always have these great photos to keep along with your memories. Hugs...
Sorry about Bruce....poor baby.
I know how you feel. I lost my cat, Leonardo, on Christmas. He was three and a half and gorgeous. I was completely wrecked and carry his picture around still.
