I found out last Thursday that my full-time job is in serious jeopardy. Basically, the organization's financial outlook is so bad that there is a very real possibility it might have to permanently shut down in a few months.
Of course, no one wants this to happen, so the board & executive director decided that in order to try to avoid the closing, it's necessary to lay off the majority of the staff. Thankfully, I'm not one of them; however, things are going to get very difficult after next week. They're laying off the 12 teachers and the remainder of us (5 people) will be responsible for teaching all of the ABE, GED & ESL classes, along with maintaining our regular positions (if you don't know what I do at my full-time job, here's a post about it).
That's right - FIVE people are supposed to teach 20 four-hour long classes and stay on top of everything we were actually hired to do. I know the alternative is that the center closes next month... and I'm extremely glad I'm not being laid off... but still. Ugh. It's going to be a bloody mess! Oh, and the layoff doesn't guarantee that we'll stay open; it just buys the organization a few more months of being able to make payroll. No one is sure what's going to happen after May.
Needless to say, I've shifted my job search into overdrive.
Cross your fingers that they love me at the job interview tomorrow!
