RBOC
- I am seriously annoyed with Comcast's latest antics - they dropped the Travel channel! WTF?! How the hell am I supposed to get my Anthony Bourdain fix now!? Grrrrr!
- I managed to aggravate an old hamstring injury after an overzealous workout on the elliptical. So not cool.
- Diana & I are now three weeks into a pilates class. The instructor is great, the class is fun, and I know it's doing me a world of good... but damn, it hurts!
- We're still not completely unpacked, but I am loving our new place. It's so much more comfortable and homey that our old place ever was (even though we lived there for five years!).
- The summer term ends on Thursday. Yay! The fall term starts the following Wednesday. Boo!
- Weekend plans: Harry Potter, Indian food, unpacking, mani/pedi, and catching up on TV (the DVR is 97% full!)

Weekend recap
Friday night with Christina & Diana:

We started out at Tapas Barcelona, and then Diana & I surprised the bride-to-be with a jaunt to Wisconsin...

Saturday morning with JW (who now lives in Chicago):

@ the Great American Cheese Collection (Cheese, cheese, and more cheese... and free samples of everything! Yummy!)
Sunday with repressed librarian:

Lemon raspberry pancakes and some extraordinarily delicious chocolates from anna shea (I had the ones on the bottom row - chai, lavender, and haiku).

RL is cat sitting for the most awesome cat ever - she's tiny, squeaky, and has a super grumpy face (although she's actually quite mellow & sweet). I'm not a huge fan of cats, but I must admit that this cat is just damn awesome... *almost* as awesome as a dog. :)

Even more news
M found out that he will be laid off at the end of this month. He works for an agency that is almost totally funded by the state & they are looking at losing almost 30% of their usual budget (well, once the budget is finally approved). There is a tiny chance that the budget cuts won't be as drastic as projected and he will get to keep his job, but in all likelihood, that's not going to happen. As of the 29th, he will officially be unemployed. :(
Apparently, 2009 hasn't given us enough of an ass-kicking quite yet.

Loss
This is just heartbreaking:
MJ's kids lost the only father they've ever known... regardless of all the controversy or what you think about MJ, you have to feel for those kids. Losing your parents is one of the most traumatic events you go through during your life. I had just turned 18 when my dad died & I barely kept it together (and still can't say I ever fully recovered). His kids are so young - I can't imagine having to process my father's death (in the spotlight, no less) at such young age.

Wrigley
I spent yesterday hanging out on enemy grounds (aka Wrigley Field*) for a school activity. It was a complicated activity that involved three faculty members standing outside of the stadium in the sun for five hours, while we waited for various students to find us (and it took forever for the students to find us, so we had about 3.5 hours of downtime!).**
After a couple of hours of gossiping and people watching, our attention eventually turned to the various grammar/punctuations errors on the signs in our vicinity. Yes, I realize this may not seem normal for some people, but we're all English teachers, so it seemed perfectly natural! Plus, we needed to amuse ourselves somehow! :)

The Ernie Banks statue with its new apostrophe (although if you look at it from the side or from more than a couple of feet away, it still looks like it's sans apostrophe).

Is it the win belonging to the Cubs (Cubs'/Cubs's Win!) or are they trying to announce that the Cubs finally won (Cubs Win!)? It's an enigma.

We had a lengthy discussion about this one (um, yes we're nerds, and yes, we were bored). At first we thought Freday was a typo and Aaron and Dad actually attended the game on a Friday. However, once we figured out that 10/06/07 was a Saturday, we thought that maybe Freday is Aaron & Day's last name... but why would their last name follow Game instead of immediately following their first names? Also, if it's their last name, why is Dad possessive instead of Freday? Is Freday code for something? Someone please solve the mystery!
Eventually, Blue Man Group showed up, so we stopped our nitpicking & joined the tourists in gaping/taking photos. :)

*Baseball is the only sport I mildly care about & I'm totally a Sox girl!
**It was a long day, but it was definitely nice to be out of the classroom! The summer term always sucks because most of the students skip classes every time the temperature goes above 70. On Wednesday, I had two students in my sophomore-level writing class - out of eleven!
