File this under TMI

Stu Dent returns to class after a two-week absence.

Stu Dent: Miss Nikki, I was out for the last two weeks because I had to go to the hospital. I have a doctor's note to show you.

Comebacknikki: I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you're feeling better now.

SD: I had an abortion.
*shoves doctor's note at CBN*

CBN: Oh, well. Um, I hope you're feeling better.

SD: It was my third, so I'm used to it by now.

CBN: Oh, okay.
*pause*
CBN: You can find the assignments on Blackboard.

SD: Great. Now that I've stopped bleeding, I can get my shit together.
*laughs*

CBN: Um, that's great.
*pause*
*pause*
CBN: Please check Blackboard for the assignments.

Five years!

Today is my five year blogiversary! To commemorate my five years of brilliance (haha), I thought it would be nice to put together a mini five-year retrospective. Of course, I couldn't fit in everything that has happened over the last five years, but I think I hit enough of the highlights...

Work Life:
When I started this blog, I was 2.5 months out of grad school. I was working for crappy non-profit during the day & teaching two classes at a local community college (and what a mess that was!). I was horribly unhappy at the crappy non-profit for a variety of reasons (evil boss, terrible pay, boring job/not in my field), but I wasn't in a position to quit and just live off of adjunct pay (and I really didn't have enough experience/know-how to land a full-time teaching position).

At the end of 2005, I finally found a position at an awesome non-profit (one that I had been stalking for years). It was education-orientated and I worked with a fantastic group of people. My ultimate goal still was to find a teaching position, but the non-profit job was a great one to have in the meantime. Unfortunately, things quickly went south at my lovely job because they ran out of money. The financial side was a complete mess. I spent the next year & a half alternatively loving the job, cursing the lack of financial management, fretting over money, and adjuncting at three schools (on top of the full-time job!) in attempts to put together a paycheck. As much as I loved that organization, it caused me an incredible amount of stress.

During my time at awesome non-profit, I started adjuncting for both Famous Chicago University (so much fun!) and Large College. Those of you who have been around for awhile may recall that I had a fantastic time at FCU (I still talk to most of those students today) and a crappy time at Large College. Of course, Large College was the school where I was eventually hired as a full-time faculty member. :) Two and a half years after graduation, I finally found a teaching position... and that is where I've been ever since (early 2007).

Love Life:
It's so weird to think that when I started this blog, M and I had only been together for 4.5 years and had just moved in together. As with any relationship, M & I have had our good times and our bad times (yes, in the last year we've had an abundance of bad, but we're working on it). In the last five years, we've dealt with everything from adjusting to living together, to adjusting to living with another person (for almost six months!), to health scares, and heartbreak. We've also had a lot of fun, loved two sweet little hamsters, spoiled each other, and just enjoyed our time together. As cheesy as it may sound, we've played hard and loved hard.

After almost 10 years together, I can honestly say that I still feel like he complements me in a way no other person ever has - I still look forward to going home to him at the end of a long day, and still feel a sense of excitement when I think about our future. Heck, I sometimes even still get butterflies. :) I don't know what the next five years will bring, but I just hope that whatever happens, he'll be with me to share it.

Social Life:
While looking over the last five years of posts, I realized just how much fun I've had (196 posts worth of fun!). One of the cool things about this blog is that it's a document of all the fun memories - everything from awesome trips (my first time in California! DKSWF!) to crazy stripper encounters. :)

My social life has also taken on a whole new dimension, directly related to blogging. When I started blogging, I never thought I would meet so many cool people (plus several who have deleted their blogs/stopped blogging)... I definitely didn't think I would form some wonderful friendships (you all know who you are!). I am lucky to have met so many fabulous bloggers - seriously, I know I wouldn't have met many of these people if it weren't for blogging, as most of them are not in my field. I even met one cool chica who lives in my neighborhood, thanks to the ol' blog! :)

Family Life:
I was going to include a Family Life section, but when I sat down to write it, I realized it was all about very unpleasant things. I didn't really feel like writing about the crappiness again, but if you want to know what happened during the last five years, check out these posts: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. As I've said many times, although I have some pretty cool blood relatives, I consider my real family to be M & my friends. They are the ones I know I can turn to, and the ones who love me for me. :)

Trust me on this one...

It's never a good idea to get wasted on a Tuesday night if you have to get up early for work on Wednesday morning... even if there is a copious amount of free and very delcious girlie drinks at your disposal.

[Christina: it was all your idea, so I'm holding you responsible!] :)

Catch up

Obviously, I'm a bit behind in my blog updating (well, actually I'm a bit behind in most aspects of my life at the moment), so I'm just going to do a quick/disjointed post to get all up to date & then everything will be good again, yes?

The ice cream festival was lots of fun, but unfortunately, it was poorly organized (see Diana's post). My favorite flavor of the night was definitely the Ferrero Rocher gelato, followed closely by the Chocolate Chili ice cream, the Salted Peanut gelato, and the Madagascar Vanilla Sheep's Milk ice cream. I wrote a more extensive post about the festival on my other blog...

Yes, I have another blog! I've been writing posts and playing with the layout for the last couple of months or so, but I'm not quite ready to reveal it yet - actually, I probably won't be linking to it here because although I'm writing under another pseudonym, it's connected to my real name. I'll eventually send the link out to those who are interested - it's a foodie blog, focused on restaurants in Chicago, special food-related events, and our regular cooking classes.

During my absence, I also had the opportunity to visit another one of my favorite festivals of the summer - the Bristol Renaissance Faire in Wisconsin with Beebs & her family (2008, 2005).

As always, there were some cool (and a few not so cool) costumes...

Of course, my life hasn't been all festivals and fun. We're five weeks into the (excruciatingly long) term, which means we're four weeks from finishing. Four days after that, we'll move into the final term of the year, which will lead into mid-December (aka our only break!). I know I say it every year, but it's always worth repeating - year-round school sucks! Five terms a year sucks! Not having a spring, summer, or fall break sucks! Needless to say, I'm desperately counting the days until the end of the October term.

Yes, there's more to say, but I must put an end to this as it is time for the return of my (hot, hot) addiction:
