The superstition is that if you look at a clock and the time reads 11:11 then you should make a wish. Despite the fact that my mother was a fairly superstitious person, I somehow missed out on learning about 11:11 wishes until I met Ex during my freshman year of college. Ex was a firm believer in 11:11 and delighted in making & reminding me to make wishes; while I'm not a believer in superstitions, I would make a wish just for the fun of it (and to please Ex). It was very sweet and is one of the few nice things from our relationship that stuck with me.
I haven't seen Ex since the end of '99 and we've had limited contact since then (a handful of emails), but on this 11:11 superday, Ex is on my mind. We had a drawn out, messy breakup that contributed to some ugliness that led to a mental breakdown. Shortly after that happened, I decided it was wise to limit our communication - our interactions seemed to only cause Ex more pain and would leave me frustrated and irritated. I don't remember when we last emailed (maybe two years ago?), but I do know from the small interactions we've had that Ex has become quite biting and cynical over the years. I don't know if Ex still makes wishes when the clock flips to 11:11, but I do hope that's one thing that wasn't abandoned in the abyss of depression.
SJK: wherever you are, I hope that 11:11 on 11.11.11 is just as magical as ever.
